Expertise

Rebecca specialises in Mental Health Law and Lasting Powers of Attorney. Rebecca studied History and Law at Bradford University and following this began a career in law working at a high street law firm initially in the family department and finally specialising in Mental Health Law. Rebecca has been an accredited member of the Law Society mental health panel since 2008. Rebecca represents both civil and forensic patients before the mental health tribunal as well as attending Care Programme Approach meetings, Hospital managers hearings and section 117 meetings.

Rebecca also regularly speaks with the Andrew Simms Centre on Mental Health Law updates for Section 12 doctors and approved clinicians from across the country.

Rebecca can advise in the following areas:

  • Mental Health and the Mental Health Act 1983
  • Advice and representation before the first-tier tribunal (mental health) to patients and their families
  • Nearest relative displacement applications
  • Section 117 aftercare disputes
  • The interface between the Mental Health Act 1983 and the Mental Capacity Act 2005
  • Drawing up Lasting Powers of Attorney for both property and finance as well as health and welfare
  • Rebecca also advises and represents individuals in personal welfare applications before the Court of Protection
